A fact that should come as a surprise to no one; and yet…
Rarely does a week go by without an organization reluctantly announcing the shocking revelation of the theft of untold numbers of personal identities — literally the most valuable asset that any of us possesses— in the most banal terms.
Whether a situation is downplayed the usual way, by telling victims between the lines that their data is not as valuable as they might think (“it only included names and email addresses”) or patronizing them into complacency (“there is no reason that the data was used maliciously but we will continue to monitor the situation”), the sheer disrespect is on full display both on and between the lines.
With the immediate assurance that it either won’t happen again because of reasons, or that it was someone else’s fault.
